Core Methodology

The Forwardable Email

How to write the 3-sentence blurb that gets forwarded instantly.

The Purpose of the Forwardable

A forwardable email is an email you send to a broker (the person making the intro) that is specifically designed for them to hit "Forward" and send directly to the target.

Its primary function is to remove work from the broker. If the broker has to paraphrase your request, write context, or explain who you are, you have failed.

The Three Elements of a Perfect Forwardable

A good forwardable has exactly three parts, and should rarely exceed 100 words.

  1. The Context (Who you are): One sentence establishing credibility.
  2. The Ask (What you want): One clear sentence stating exactly what you want from the target.
  3. The "Why Them" (The hook): One sentence explaining why the target specifically should care right now.

Hey man, great seeing you last week.

Can you intro me to Sarah at Acme Corp? We just launched a new HR tool and I think they could really use it since they are growing so fast. Would love to pick her brain for 15 mins.

Thanks!

Subject: Intro to Sarah (Acme) / John (HRTech Startup)

Hi Broker,

Would you be open to forwarding a blurb to Sarah at Acme?

Blurb for forwarding:
John is the founder of HRTech. They just launched a tool that automates compliance for remote teams (currently used by Stripe and Plaid). Given Acme's recent expansion into Europe, John would love a 15-minute call to share how they handled the GDPR rollout.

Best, John

Strict Formatting Rules

  • Put the blurb below the fold. Visually separate your message to the broker from the text you want them to forward. Use headers like "Context for forwarding:".
  • Write in the third person (Optional but powerful). Some brokers prefer if you write the blurb in the third person ("John is the founder...") so they can literally just copy/paste it into their own email rather than hitting forward.
  • Never include attachments. Attachments trigger spam filters and slow down mobile reading. Use URLs (DocSend, Notion, Google Docs) instead.
  • Subject Line matters. It should clearly state what the email is. Format: Intro: [Target] / [You] or Context on [Your Startup] for [Target].
